The special place in the practice of Vajrayana is occupied by Amitayus (tib. thse dpag med) — Endless life. Together with Ushnishavijaya and White Tara, they make up the triad of Deities of Long Life (tib. tshe lha rnam gsum).
The rituals associated with the deities of longevity originated in ancient Indian Buddhism. It is believed that Guru Padmasambhava brought these methods to Tibet and hid these practices in secret spiritual treasures-termas. In the XIV century Mahasiddha Tangtong Gyalpo discovered these teachings and transmitted them on to his disciples.
The other lineage of practice comes from the great Jowo Je Atisha.
This thangka is made in the old Tibetan picturesque style of martan (tib. dmar thang).
