Guru Dorje Drolo

This thangka shows one of the eight forms of Guru Rinpoche — Guru Dorje Drolo (tib. gu ru rdo rje gro lod).

An extremely wrathful form of Guru Padmasambhava, holding the vajra from the meteoric iron in his right hand and purba (ritual knife) to the left. He rides on a pregnant tigress in the middle of the ocean of flaming fire. This terribly furious tigress stands on two negative forces, such as Gyalpo and Senmo. Above is flying Garuda.

In the sky (on the left) is Guru Padmasambhava, this is the source of this teaching. Adzom Drugpa (1842-1934) (on the right) is a terton who discovered this knowledge as terma. Below the main figure are the guardians of Dzogchen Ma-Za-Tam sum — Ekajati, Rahula and Dorje Legpa.
